Personal Trainer Vows to End the Trend of Showering with Soda Pop!!

By Robyn Morrisette

Would you take a shower using soda pop instead of water?  NEVER!  So, if you wouldn’t wash the outside of your body with soda, why would you ever wash the inside of your body with it?   Think about this: each cell in your body is completely regenerated every year. Your skin, your muscles, even your organs are constantly degenerating and regenerating.  The process is going on right now, even if you are not aware of it. The pace of this process depends on your age.  Somewhere around age 25, the natural process of “building up” that your body has undergone since birth crosses over to a process where degeneration occurs faster than regeneration.

But we can do something about this. We don’t have to lose muscle, gain fat, feel tired, give up, and give in as we age.  If we choose, we can look and feel good for life.  We have the opportunity to re-create ourselves, if we decide to do it, and if we know how.

Now, what do you think your body uses to re-create itself?  If you guessed “food”, you’re right. Most people have no clue what they’re doing to themselves with the food they normally eat.  Nor are most people aware of how much better they could look and feel if they stopped feeding themselves accidentally and started re-creating themselves intentionally.  Food literally is fuel for our bodies.  Think of a locomotive. The driver regularly fills the engine with high quality, clean coal (fuel) which keeps the train running like a well oiled machine.  We need to do the same thing with our bodies; fill it regularly with high quality, nutritious food (fuel) and our engine will run the same way.

The following are some guidelines to start you on your way to becoming a fuel burning machine!

1.                   Count “portions”, not calories.

A portion is an amount of food roughly equal to the size of your clenched fist or the palm of your hand.

2.                   You have to eat!

When you reduce food intake-your body decreases the rate at which it burns fat because it assumes a famine has just hit.  You also begin to lose muscle tissue. When you go off the diet you will gain back the fat you lost, and more.  That’s because you’ve turned your body into a less efficient fat-burning machine by losing muscle.

3.                   Eat six nutritious meals a day.

Eating every 2-3 hours helps accelerate your metabolism so you burn more calories and keeps your blood sugar at a constant level throughout the day. Each “meal” should consist of a portion of protein, complex carbs (veggies) and simple carbs (brown rice, potato for example).

4.                   Drink a lot of Water.

Water helps rid your body of wastes, transports nutrients throughout the body and controls your appetite.  The color of your urine will tell you if you are properly hydrated.  It should be almost devoid of color.

5.                   There is no such thing as eating “perfectly”.

We’re all human.  Don’t be too hard on yourself if you end up eating too much or not enough one day.  If you do, just put it behind you and get back on schedule. Don’t beat yourself up, and don’t ever give up on yourself.

6.                   Move your body!

You will increase your metabolic rate – the rate at which your body burns fat.  Your body requires more energy to maintain muscle – fat just sits there.  Find something you enjoy physically and commit to moving your body,
